Volunteer Opportunities : Positions

Current list of volunteer positions at The Arboretum of Flagstaff

Whether you have a green thumb or not, we always need help with basic garden maintenance and tasks, like watering, pruning, planting, and weeding gardens—in the greenhouses or outside. You’ll get a chance to learn about native plants and plant propagation while improving the public gardens! Tuesday is usually our outside gardening day, but we are happy to work around your schedule!

Did you know that The Arboretum is responsible for managing 31 different endangered species? Your help is needed to gather data from ongoing experiments on threatened and endangered plants both on-site and in the field.  Work may involve taking measurements on plants, weighing plants, hand-pollinating flowers, germinating seed, preparing test plots, transplanting plants and recording survival information.

Our special events are entertaining—and free for volunteers! We produce the Summer Concert Series, Native Herb Festival, Plant Sale, Mushroom Festival, Wine in the Woods, Festival of Science, and Pumpkin Walk.  Duties include help with event set up, photography, cashiering, directing cars and post event cleanup. Please look over the enclosed calendar for event dates.

Do you love learning and sharing knowledge? Arboretum docents receive extensive training about the work of the Arboretum and the natural landscape of the Colorado Plateau. Docents lead two daily regularly scheduled garden tours, seasonal tours, scheduled public school field trips, and scheduled group tours. The 2015 program begins April 1. Please email Lisa.Doskicil@thearb.org for more information.

If you love kids and nature, these positions are for you! You can assist with any or all aspects of our education programs:  school field trips, summer camps, computer design and word processing, developing signs and flyers, and creating classroom kits and slide shows. You’ll learn about the flora and fauna of our region, and all about environmental education!

If you prefer office work, you can assist with event publicity, photocopying, word processing, developing signs and flyers, informational handouts, and internet searches.

Serve as an Arboretum greeter and answer questions from our guests! You will assist with reception (phone and in person), admissions, booking school groups, sales, cashiering, restocking and re-shelving.

Are you handy? Do you like to work outside? Facilities volunteers assist in routine maintenance of grounds and facilities, and work on special projects.

We are hiring Summer Camp instructors for our day camps that run from June 15-July 13 in week-long sessions. Age groups are 5-6, 7-8, and 9-12. Possible themes/topics include: outdoor survival, gardening, bugs and birds, and conservation.  Please email Lisa.Doskocil@thearb.org for more information.
