Wood Pellet Heating Project

At the Arboretum, we spend $3000 per year on propane for our older propane boiler. Using wood pellet fuel, we expect to save $900-$1000 annually!

The main savings come from the low transportation costs. Wood pellet fuel is produced and sold locally, in bags or bulk, for convenient pick up or delivery. By using wood pellet fuel, we can support local Flagstaff businesses and the wellbeing of local forests simultaneously.

Wood pellet stoves are specifically designed to maximize efficiency and cleanliness. Not only do these stoves burn the wood pellet fuel, they also burn the resulting smoke, thus reducing carbon emissions. Popular in Europe since the 1990s for this ability to decrease carbon emissions, wood pellet stoves are now becoming more common in the United States. At the Arboretum, we chose a moderate sized wood pellet boiler with a bulk feed, installed by Ted Wyatt.

Wood pellet fuel is not just for large spaces and businesses. There are efficient wood pellet stoves for homes and smaller spaces. With wood pellet fuel, homeowners can reduce heating costs and utilize a renewable resource.
