SECTION 3 Warm Ponderosa Pine Forest/Pinyon-Juniper Woodland Use plants from this list for landscapes in areas in Zone 5 or warmer (minimum temperature –10 to -20 degrees) characterized by Ponderosa Pine Forest/ Pinyon Juniper Woodland at elevations above 5500’ and in other areas or microclimates with seasonally dry soils of moderate to excessive drainage (ranging in texture from loam to cinder). Flagstaff communities include Continental, Fox Hills, the base of Mt. Elden (or “Banana Belt”), Timberline, Doney Park, Leupp, Winona, Ash Fork, forested areas in east Flagstaff along North 89A, warmer areas of Williams and north along Highway 64 to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and in other neighboring dry, “warm” areas with moderately long growing seasons such as Chino Valley and portions of Prescott. With careful choice of warm micro-sites, plants from USDA Zone 6 may also be used in gardens in these areas. Trees:
